Abby Lakew, is an Ethiopian singer, songwriter and actress that was born in the city of Gonder in Ethiopia.

She left Ethiopia for the U.S. at the age of thirteen.

She had a strong passion for music and had taken choir and African dance classes throughout her high school years in Dallas, Texas.

Her brother, Million Lakew, whom is a musician, had encouraged her into making Ethiopian music. 

In 2007 she released her debut studio album Manale. 

Which featured both English and Amharic songs, and was a reflection of her two identities – Ethiopian and American.

Her first single manale grabbed the attention of all aged listeners.

She caught the attention of many Ethiopians through a few concerts that took place in Europe and the U.S. in 2008.

She was recognized for having a unique style.

The same year she started touring around the world mainly in Europe, USA and in the Middle East.

The following year she went back to Ethiopia to do a tour for a fundraiser.

The fundraiser helped to build a hospital for children with heart problems.

In 2012 she landed the leading role in a critically acclaimed Ethiopian movie called Eyerus.

She portrayed a countryside girl called Eyerus moving for the first time to a big city and trying to adjust to the dizzying experience of the capital city.

The movie had a great success in Ethiopia.

In 2012 she released a new single Shikorina followed by Endemewadeh, in 2014 Abererew and 2015 the smash hit Yene Habesha and Befikir Eskista. 

Currently Abby Lakew is working on her New Album which will be released in May 2016.
